Basil Soda Couture AW 2012

Basil Soda's couture collection for Autumn / Winter 2012 was a darker approach than we've seen from the Lebanese designer up to this point.Inspired by metamorphoses, the collection went from deep rustic shades of dark olive green and indian red through to what the designer referred to as a 'promising white future'.

Gone were the pops of colour and any dramatic use of sparkly, feminine embellishment. Instead texture was key, with fringing and 3D structured shapes around the waist and shoulders. The bling gave way to more sophisticated Autumnal leaf-like embellishment in old gold, crawling up sheer gowns and midi dresses.
The fitted pencil dresses in white and black with sheer panels and shimmering embellished sections, topped with stiff mini peplums were a highlight, as was the designer's use of fringing, which on some dresses was chic (see the green full-length gown with sheer top and full skirt with mini fringed sections) but made some models look like they were wearing hairy dresses - perhaps not the most practical outfits but incredible to watch as they swished along the catwalk.
Contrasting dark and light, the designer went on to show a series of the glamorous white gowns he's become famous for, this time blending sheer panels with structured bodice panels, plunge necklines and deep centre slits.
The traditional bride closed the show in dramatic fashion, in a heavily detailed sheer gown made from acres of soft chiffon with snowflake-like embroidery with lilac detailing.
