Following endless months of speculation over who the house of Dior would name as John Galliano's replacement and after a short stint from Bill Gaytten, the newly found Artistic Director of Christian Dior unveiled his debut Dior collection at Paris Haute Couture Week mere hours ago. Quite possibly his biggest fashion career moment to date, the high profile show was watched by fashion royalty with Anna Wintour, Anna dello Russo, Donatella Versace and Marc Jacobs sat front row.
Set to a highly decorated back drop of wall to wall flowers varying in colour from room to room, the runway was an intimate set up with guests sat very close to the models themselves. The collection was a simplistic, clean lined and modern take with chic shapes, minimalism and femininity all at the same time. The colour palette spanned popping pinks, vibrant yellows as well as classic blacks and muted pastels, whilst textures took the form of sheer organza, glittering intricate embellishments and pure simplicity. Our favourite thing about the collection was the experimentation with shape where really it was a case of anything goes; Dior classics remained present with sleek lined trouser suits with an edge of modern detail in textures, signature shift dresses with a twist and ladylike full skirts with a real wow factor. Umbrella skirts were a real stand out for us as well as the prevent peplum shape teamed with a sleek capris pant.
We're sure Raf Simons will have his critics out there claiming the collection was too safe, but we think it was somewhat of a triumph for the new found Dior mastermind. A great way to kick off the week of couture fashion in style.
